Relationship Coach Specialist (RCS) Certificate

This 40-hour certificate program consists of three courses and is designed specifically for professionals without previous coach training who want to specialize in relationship coaching. The first course consists of the first 20 hours of the Institute’s Foundational course, our ICF Accredited Coach Training Program. Our Foundational course was designed specifically for therapists, counselors, human services professionals and others with backgrounds in the people business. It facilitates and assists those individuals who wish to move from their current profession into coaching and those who wish to add coaching to their current practice. The second course is a 12 hour advanced course that focuses exclusively on relationship coaching with couples. The third course applies the learning from the second course in an eight hour skill-building and development practicum.

For those with 20 hours or more of coach training, click here for information on the 20-hour RCS Certificate.

Foundational Course
The first course of the RCS Certificate meets for 20 hours, and is divided into five modules. All classes meet by teleconference one hour twice weekly for ten weeks with the same individuals in each class.

Module 1: Introduction to Coaching covers the most recent definitions of coaching, distinctions between therapy and coaching, and Listening as a Coach.

Module 2: Coaching Basics defines the coaching alliance and explains how you might design one, what elements are necessary for the first coaching conversation, introduces and explains the basic coaching model, discusses powerful questions and purposeful inquiry, how to design the action, and what someone does with what they already know.

Module 3: The Coaches Tool Box covers skills and tools for empowering and forwarding the action, Advanced Coaching skills, and allows time for the students to practice coaching.

Module 4: Marketing Your Practice provides insight into marketing effectively, creating a full and fulfilling practice, the importance of credibility, visibility, and contact with a client and practice building tips.

Module 5: Skills Application and Practicum occurs through peer work group labs, case studies and skill refinement.

Relationship Coaching with Couples
The second course of the RCS Certificate meets for 12 hours. This eight-week course builds on the learning from the Foundational course and provides a coaching model and structure for working with couples who want to create more fulfilling relationships in their lives. The format for the course includes discussion of course materials and assigned readings, live coaching to demonstrate different ways to apply the learning with clients, and practice coaching outside of the scheduled class time. The course meets weekly for 90 minutes.

Participants will:

  • Gain an in-depth understanding of a conscious relationship coaching model for working with couples
  • Design a coaching alliance with each client/partner and with couples
  • Create a personal vision with client/partner as well as a shared relationship vision with each couple
  • Utilize Mirroring technique for effective communication
  • Establish and implement an action plan with couples to achieve the relationship vision
  • Gain a greater understanding of the role of coach in working with couples, particularly being authentic and present; and ways to "'self-manage" during your coaching sessions with couples.

Relationship Coaching Skills Practicum
The third course of the RCS Certificate meets for eight hours over six weeks. The course provides participants with an opportunity to practice in greater depth the relationship coaching skills learned in the second course. Each meeting will involve live coaching with either an actual couple or a role-play situation designed to assist participants in gaining greater confidence and competence in relationship coaching.
