Coaching with the Internal Family Systems (IFS) Model

COURSE IFS

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a clear, non-pathologizing, and empowering psychological model developed by psychologist Dr. Richard Schwartz. Although its roots are in the world of psychotherapy, IFS is relevant to a wide circle of applications and can be a profound tool to “turbocharge” coaching.

Internal Family Systems recognizes that our psyches are naturally comprised of different aspects (also called parts or subpersonalities), as well as a Self—the compassionate, resilient, and grounded center of the psyche. IFS, whether in a coaching or therapy context, promotes the development of Self-leadership, wherein the Self, rather than one or more parts, is in the leadership role in a person’s inner system.

The basic tenets of IFS include:

  • The normal state of every human being is to be subdivided into parts. Having parts is not a reaction to any events that happen to us.
  • When we come into the world, we’re all born with a Self as well as with our parts either manifest or in potential.
  • The Self is always whole and unharmed. It cannot be damaged, and it is present in each of us regardless of what happens to us through the course of our life. The Self is the healing force in each of us.
  • All of our parts have a “preferred role” that they naturally manifest when they are not in distress, and each part has an important function in our system.
  • All parts have positive intent at their core.

What does IFS have to do with coaching?

People generally come to coaching with specific goals they want to attain. They may hope it’ll be a straight shot to achieving those goals, but it’s not always that simple. Many people (as well as our culture in general) subscribe to the notion that obstacles are sabotaging parts that must be outsmarted, overridden, or completely ignored. The IFS Model suggests that these obstacles carry wisdom and positive intent—and that developing a relationship with them is the most fruitful way to work toward goals and achieve lasting success.
