This course employs interactive telephonic lectures, demonstrations, and role-play techniques. Also included: focused readings and “field” exercises. This course is an innovative, web-based group learning program designed to develop the eight Core Coaching Competencies within Comprehensive Motivational Interventions, or CMI.
Simply put, CMI is a stepped-care application of what is known as Motivational Interviewing, or MI. MI has been defined as a “collaborative, person-centered form of guiding - to elicit and strengthen motivation for change.”
There are 1,500 MI trainers functioning in 43 languages, and eleven books are available on the application of MI. Over 800 related publications and 180 associated clinical trials have been done, involving dozens of international, federal, state, and foundation research and dissemination grants. Four different meta-analyses demonstrate its effectiveness, spanning the areas of health, wellness, and lifestyle-related problems. These would include substance abuse, high stress levels, smoking, poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, etc.
The CMI approach facilitates personal growth and behavior change with a highly structured, collaborative self-management tool known as Brief Action Planning, or BAP, and is geared to introduce progressively more complex MI and communication strategies if and when client issues or problems become more troubling or refractory.
