Naked Living: Disrobing the Authentic Self

We arrived in this world naked and we will leave this world naked, yet we won't remember either experience (with some rare exceptions). We have spent most of our lives clothed, protected from weather, and from societies norms, and from our own learned embarrassment. Do you remember as a kid (or with kids you have witnessed) how easy they are with nudity? And in fact my daughters as toddlers and now their children as toddlers, throw their clothes off in an exuberant and joyful expression of freedom.

I have been a psychologist in private practice for 20 years and an executive leadership coach for another 20 years. In both of those relationships with clients, the best outcomes came from moments of nakedness by the client. I am not talking about nakedness as a state of nudity, but a metaphoric view of nakedness as an emotional and spiritual value in our human growth and development of our being.

In my writings, teachings and speaking, throughout my professional life I have emphasized the value of holistic expression of the self and of a whole person view of personal, psychological, and spiritual development.

In life and leadership coaching we model the belief that our clients are creative, resourceful and capable more than they know... and that they are whole even though they may not experience that in their life... yet.  It is my job as a coach, a mentor, a confidante, to believe in my clients so much that they may begin to believe and begin to say what they have not said, dream what they have not dreamed, feel what they have not felt and do it out loud in a relationship with a confidential partner who asks to hear and who listens with a deep focus and a trusting presence.

I also think it is important for people to have strong boundaries, which means not to be 'naked' all the time. You have to pick your time and place and person to share your truth with. Just like we wear clothes most of the time, when we are naked we do so within our comfort level of place and person. Sure you might have skinny dipped in your life or walked naked on a private beach, or dipped in a natural hot spring somewhere au naturale... but only with people you trusted. And yet, wasn't there an exhilaration and freedom when you did that? I believe it is similarly freeing when we are able to share what we haven't shared with someone we trust . . .when we can share our naked truth or when we listen to someone else share to us, we are part of a very important conversation that can be transforming.

Is there anything you are keeping hidden that you could share with a trusting confidante? Think about it. Now, when, and with whom could you have that conversation? If you do, please share your experience with me.

As always,

Dr. Pat

Did Pat's pondering strike a chord with you?

Pat is planning to write a book on Naked Living, and would like any of you who have stories of times when you shared your 'naked truth' or 'bared your soul' to someone and how it made you feel after you did. There will be sections about being 'naked' in relationships, family, career, organizations, work place and with yourself. If I use your story, I of course will not use your name or any identifying information and you will receive a free copy of the book, if it gets published. Please send them to Pat@DrPatWilliams.com.

Have you seen our new Recommendations page?

If you have a resource or an organization you would like to recommend for inclusion, or if you are a student who has written a book, we'd love to have you submit it for consideration (We do not accept affiliate links), which you can do here.
