Ponderings
Dear Readers of TLC,
This issue includes true stories of three coaching businesses at
various stages. Many who are attracted to this profession see it
as a way of making money working with motivated clients, but do
not always get the message that this is a BUSINESS. It takes time
to build a successful coaching business and it does not happen overnight.
Coaching is not a "get rich quick" scheme. The truth,
which many coaching schools do not tell you, is that it will take
18 months to three years or longer to build a thriving coaching
business, and you have to work hard in the beginning to market,
improve your skills, network, and continually learn. Coaching is
a fun, profitable and rewarding career. But even I had to withstand
ups and downs in the first two years of moving full-time into coaching.
For success, you must learn what marketing strategies work for you.
Are you a good public speaker? Are you a writer? Are you a good
networker with “centers of influence”? Would it be better
for you to partner with a person that is a better marketer than
you? And will you invest in hiring your own best coach to mentor
you? Success comes from patience, perseverance, and passion. If
you have all those and learn from your mistakes, you will be very
successful.
Remember, we provide various advanced classes for marketing and
niche development, plus we have great mentor coaches available to
assist you. If you are called to coaching and want to be successful,
then make a plan, hire a coach, start with our foundational course,
and do what it takes to achieve your dream. Here at ILCT, we “aspire
to inspire” by developing quality coaches who will be successful
financially and be a strong positive influence in today’s
world. We are proud of our graduates and invite you to join us!

Roger's
Coaching Business
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" says the Gremlin
to a first year coach.
Are you crazy…? Why give up a highly successful private practice…?
That is what some of my friends, family and Gremlin say about my
desire to transition out of my full-pay therapy practice into a
full-time coaching practice.
In doing the inside/out work as part of the Foundational Course
at the Institute of Life Coach Training, I discovered that three
of my core values are Adventure, Risk Taking, and Service. That’s
probably why I chose to ride my motorcycle 6448 miles “cross-country” in
1985, why I rafted the Grand Canyon from Lake Powell into Lake Mead
(288 miles in 1991), and why I backpacked France, Italy, Croatia
and Bosnia in 2002. I guess it’s also why working with people
has always been exciting and fulfilling.
About 9 years ago, I had the idea of marketing a method of removing
blocks to peak performance in healthy people. I was so confident
that people could achieve the life of their dreams that I was willing
to tie my compensation to the achievement of concrete criteria that
were co-created with the client. I felt the blocks to an ideal life
could be effectively removed using processes such as Eye Movement
Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) and Thought Field Therapy
(TFT). This was already happening in my private practice. Clients
would report being amazed that they could now do things that they
never thought possible. I pitched my idea to three trusted colleagues
who all thought I was nuts and who told me that people would never
pay for that. Unfortunately, I trusted them more than my instincts.
I met Pat Williams during his summer symposium in Cape Cod last
August. I felt a sense of incredible excitement as he presented
his material. His methods were different from mine but people were
paying significant sums to co-create their future. When I discovered
that most coaching was done over the telephone, I immediately saw
how my values of Adventure, Risk-Taking and Service could be met
coaching from my Motor Home. My passion was ignited! I shared this
passion with Pat and was thrilled when he agreed to become my mentor
coach. I volunteered for the coaching demo during the last day of
class resulting in a five-year transition plan.
While I have only coached since 1/05, I presently have four clients
paying me $400 per month for two hours of coaching. I believe that
immediately hiring my mentor coach and working from a “possibility
model” has helped speed my transition. Moreover, I regularly
pitch coaching to everyone I meet, discussing its place in a “continuum
of services” offered. Finally, I continue to offer EMDR/TFT “performance” services
to clients able to meet in the office to diffuse limiting blocks.
This is what I’ve always been best at, what I’m known
for, and it seems a natural fit.
So am I crazy??? The Gremlin might think so…! But I love
the possibilities, the creative outlets, and the portability of
this new profession.

June's
Coaching Business
When I was introduced to life coaching,
I found something I did not know I was looking for.
The timing was perfect – synchronicity at its
finest. In the spring of 1999, I was grieving the loss
of my 24-year-old son six months before that time. I
went to a one-day workshop featuring Pat Williams. I
had curtailed my therapy practice by not taking on new
cases. I felt I would become obsolete if I did not do
something different. In the hours with Pat, I recognized
that I had been coaching for years in my private and
professional life. The prospect of coaching attracted
me because it was so positive, action-oriented, and
void of pathology and suicidal emergencies.
I enrolled in the foundations class
the summer of 1999 and have been formally coaching ever
since. I developed DreamCatchers Life Coaching, a small
business that provides individual and group coaching
to a variety of individuals. It is a private business
that I do part time while I continue to do some therapy.
I also work part time at a community college, providing
coaching to individuals with psychiatric and neuropsychological
disorders. Our goals are focused on school success.
At this point in my career, I am
working on ICF certification. I have just completed
my class hours and have accumulated enough hours to
apply this summer. The class on Wellness Coaching has
shifted my thinking and planning in a new and exciting
direction. I am planning a wellness retreat, writing
a workbook, and planning some wellness experiences for
the patients of a family physician.
I am evolving daily since my introduction
to coaching. I am healthier, happier and more centered.
My life purpose is “to touch souls deeply while
honoring mine”. I am now doing a better job of
both. It was essential to hire a coach to facilitate
this process. I see coaching as “a kick in the
rear by a foot in a slipper”. I have been the
wearer of the slippers and the receiver of the kicks.
At the beginning of one coaching call,
my client asked, “How are you today?” I
said, “I am FUNderful” – an unintentional
but poignant slip. The truth is that I am "FUNderful" and
coaching has made it possible!

Marilyn's
Coaching Business
Editor:
Welcome, Marilyn O’Hearne, it’s a pleasure
to have you here! Our readers are looking forward to
hearing about your coaching business! Plus, we hope
to hear more about your involvement with ILCT.
Marilyn:
Thank you, Annette, I’m glad to share!
E: How long have you had a coaching business?
M: I started it in 1998, so it’s been 7 years.
E: Tell us how you started with ILCT and your current roles.
M: I graduated from the second ILCT class in 1999 with Pat Williams
and Sherry Lowry as my instructors, and have been on the faculty
since 2003. I teach the core curriculum, practicum, and lead mentor
groups. I met Pat at the ICF conference in 1998, knew his program
would be coming out, and waited for it. I had sampled another
coach training program's teleclasses and decided I wanted to be
in a training program with people from my field who have some
of the same gifts and skills (listening, presence, etc) and would
be starting from a similar place.
E: Besides working for ILCT, what are your other primary markets/clients?
M: Leaders and those in transition. I am in my fourth year of coaching
Environmental Protection Agency managers here in Region VII (Kansas
City). Those leaders have permission to use the coaching for personal,
professional, or a combination. It has been one of their most popular
development programs, and the managers I have coached there have
advanced their careers as well as improved in-law relationships,
bought their dream home, etc.
I have also worked with leaders and professionals who are close
to derailing, burn out, and/or considering making a career change.
After renewing their energy, and identifying vision and values,
some choose to recreate their current positions, and others to make
the career change.
I have had the privilege of mentor coaching other coaches. Also,
I coach ADDers and creatives on improving focus, organization, and
attention to finances. Last summer two financial products salespeople
found me. One's goal was to reach the front page of the sales report
for her first time; the other to increase their business by 50%,
breaking out of his pattern of leaving when frustrated. Both reached
their goals within 3 months of coaching. What made these goals extra
rewarding for us was that the "front page" salesperson wanted to
use her financial gain to be more generous with others as well as
herself, and her extra time was applied to deepening her relationships
with God and her husband. The increased business client also chose
to get himself back in shape physically and spiritually. One of
my first clients continues to let me know how our coaching produced
sustained, life changing results. She has sponsored other women's
first month of coaching with me. A career transition client left
her career as a helping professional, discovered and developed her
creative gifts, and now has a thriving creative business and lifestyle,
increasing her joy and energy.
My shifting from therapy to coaching has also increased my energy
and joy, as I live out my life purpose of Renew, Discover, and Develop
with clients who are healthy, resourceful, and fun to work with.
E: How is your income generated?
M: Coaching, teaching, writing and training. I self-published a
workbook, Renewing Your Spirit, this spring which I sell from my
website and at speaking engagements. I am currently working on my
second workbook, Transforming Transitions. I have been paid for
writing two series of columns. Another income source is training
and speaking. The two trainings I offer are Developing Coaching
Skills and Intercultural Communication. More information about the
trainings, speaking topics, and groups I have presented to are on
my website. Being paid for speaking and writing is like getting
paid for marketing your business! I also have done some pro bono
articles and speaking. In the free speaking, I have added to my
emailing list and generated more business.
E: Do you make adjustments in your coaching business from time to
time? If so, how do you determine how to adapt, and when to adapt?
M: Yes! I raised my fee last year as I reflected on how much my
clients gained through our coaching (particularly measurably by
the sales clients) and encouraged by a former client to do so. Last
year I also revamped my website and business identity/logo as my
writing grew to be a bigger part of my business as I felt called
to reach a greater audience.
E: Can you tell us about one or two significant challenges you overcame
in building your coaching business?
M: I think that therapists may be best suited to do coaching in
terms of both natural strengths and skills, yet marketing and business
knowledge may be more of a challenge. Consultants can simply add
coaching to their offerings and market to the same clients. I don't
believe this is true for therapist/coaches. Don't hesitate to get
the help you need!
E: Is there something you would share that made you feel "I wish
I'd known that earlier!"
M: That would be--website marketing. I started with a brochure which
was useful by identifying a business name but impractical because
it is constantly changing/evolving. The website as a brochure is
much easier to update. When I first worked with someone on creating
a website, I incorrectly assumed that marketing the website was
included. Simply putting up a website will not generate clients!
Just as writing a book proposal while writing the book can make
sense in their influencing each other, so marketing a website is
ideally addressed in the creating of it. I also have taken community
college and computer center classes (some of them free), on Outlook,
PowerPoint, and Web Design. Edwina offers a class for those who
want to increase their Internet competencies.
E: What have you done to make your coaching business stand out from
the rest?
M: I hired marketing professionals to help develop my business identity/logo.
Also, I identified my strengths/gifts/results and communicate those
to others. Actually, student feedback resulted in references to
my gift as a "velvet hammer." My gentle strength was referenced
by my graduate school advisor 27 years ago and this skills enables
my clients to feel safe and challenged at the same time.
E: Could you tell us some of your "best practices" that have helped
you run a successful coaching business?
M: 1--Going with my strengths and gifts: leadership and writing
(creativity). This has included influencing the development of coaching
within my church of 10,000 and serving as a coach for leaders there,
as well as serving as a leader for various organizations. 2--Going
with my own natural rhythm: setting office hours (generally 7:30-4:30,
as I am a morning person), scheduling time for writing, learning
how to choose a quality coach that is a good “fit,” and
better self-coaching (through using The Path to get a very clear
vision.) 3--For the speaking part of my business, appropriate training:
becoming a member of National Speakers Association and attending
workshops and networking with other speakers. This networking helped
me learn what I needed regarding the business of speaking/training.
Through experience, I learned that my target market is small groups
(up to 25), either in a training environment or an interactive speaking
engagement. 4--I am in contact with coaching colleagues on a regular
basis. Also, I am in a monthly writing group at church with very
talented, fun, supportive women. The ILCT faculty meetings provide
some coaching "fellowship".
E: Marilyn, your successes have given us inspiration and insights
for our own coaching businesses! Thank you for sharing, and we’ll
be looking for you around the ILCT “campus!”
Marilyn's clients attribute their breakthrough increased PEP (Performance,
Effectiveness, and Profitability, and/or Peace, Energy, and Prosperity)

Total
Life Coaching: 50+ Life Lessons, Skills, &Techniques
to Enhance Your Practice . . . and Your Life!
A New Book by Patrick Williams and
Lloyd J. Thomas
Life coaching is more than a collection of techniques
and skills. It is more than something you do. Life coaching
reflects who you are-it is your authentic being in action.
Readers of Pat Williams' and Deborah Davis' book, Therapist
as Life Coach, know Pat to be a gifted life coach and passionate
teacher. Here Pat and psychologist/colleague and writer
of more than 1600 newspaper columns, Lloyd J. Thomas, build
on this earlier book and share a unique insight into the
coaching process, which shows you precisely how to enhance
your professional practices through practical and effective
life coaching. It also empowers you to change your own lives
through use of the practical information and philosophy
presented here.
Total Life Coaching is organized into a series of 52 life lessons,
and is designed to be either read cover-to-cover or dipped into,
as needed, for assistance when conducting a coaching session. Keeping
life's processes on the "message and lesson" level makes living
and life coaching much easier and more enjoyable. Total Life Coaching
guides you step-by-step through the complex process of learning
and coaching these fifty important lessons. The lessons are organized
into
8 sections: Creating a Personal Identity; Coaching Spirituality
and Life Purpose; Coaching Communication Skills; Living Life with
Integrity; Success: Clients Achieving their Potential; Coaching
Cognitive Skills; Creating High-Quality Relationships; Understanding
Your Past to Create a Desired Future.
Total Life Coaching by Pat and Lloyd is more than just a book. It
is an interactive experience in which you will find recipes for
living your life more authentically, as well as master time-honored
lessons that you can bring to your coaching clients [or can incorporate
in your own life]. Regardless of the personal coaching techniques
or skills you may have learned, you may still not be the most effective
coach you can become. This book will help you move closer to that
goal.
Advance Acclaim
"All too often Life Coaching is seen as new-age wishful thinking.
In fact our research at the University of Sydney has shown that well-conducted,
evidence-based Life Coaching has the potential to be a terrifically
powerful methodology for personal and organizational change. Good
Life Coaching can help people set and reach their goals, can enhance
their sense of well-being and personal development, and can even increase
aspects of emotional intelligence. Pat William's and
Lloyd Thomas's Total Life Coaching is refreshing and welcome change
from much of the over-hyped Life Coaching material. This is a well-grounded
journey through easily-applied positive psychology, with 52 key
lessons that everyone will benefit from. Easy to read, intelligent
and detailed enough for practicing life coaches, this book is a
must-have for the personal development bookshelf. Enjoy!"
