Tomorrow's Life Coach (TLC) is a monthly online
journal from the Institute for Life Coach Training
(ILCT) that nourishes the intellect, intuition and
inspiration of the personal and business coaching
community.
Pat's
Ponderings
As I write this month, my mind is on my upcoming journey
to Africa for three weeks in the bush of Tanzania. This
journey will be led by Richard Leider, who wrote Claiming
Your Place at the Fire. I met Richard in Vancouver
at the Future of Coaching Summit and we sat at a table
and discussed the role of spirituality in coaching.
How can we bring the conversation of spirituality to
a higher level of consciousness without crossing the
confusing and personal boundaries of religious beliefs?
How can we avoid debating who is right and who is wrong?
I was born and raised with Christian beliefs as taught
by the United Methodist Church. I then studied international
religions in college. I have continued those studies,
expanding my knowledge with much of it being paradoxical
or challenging. That is why I tend to focus on basic
beliefs and basic truths of all religions as well as
other teachings that emphasize love, cooperation, right
living, and service. Many of us would agree that there
is much debate over who has the "truth" and
how is it shared or transmitted to people.
I am going on my quest to Africa for adventure and
for personal discovery. I will be away from any routines
that I know and will be where many believe human civilization
began thousands of years ago. I will be unable to contact
my wife or family during these three weeks. I will be
keeping a journal, engaging in conversation with my
fellow travelers (nine other men), and tribal leaders
along the way. My reflections with be on spirit, meaning,
purpose, and calling. What can I take from this birthplace
of humanity that I can bring back to a world that sometimes
seems contradictory to the word progress? Can I get
a deeper connection to my true spirit that is my gift
from God, universal consciousness, and the mystery of
life in the largest sense of the word? How will
this affect my involvement with the profession of coaching,
with the training and writing that I do? My purpose
has been to influence and inspire the lives of many
so that they may influence and inspire the lives of
those they work with. That purpose led to the development
of a coach training school that has reached thousands.
I can have a larger impact by giving quality training
and personal development opportunities to those whose
paths I cross. I have trained and attracted marvelous
teachers who represent ILCT and my vision. And
we have been proud that we are one of the few coach
training schools (and one of the first) to include a
major part of the training on "coaching from the
inside out". That is our attempt to ground
our teaching on the spiritual and transpersonal development
of the coach and their future clients.
True inspiration means to take in spirit…the
breath of life, the energy of purpose, and the unique
calling of each person. That is my goal – to inspire
others.
