Pat's
Ponderings
April . . . a time of new beginnings
. . . new growth . . . awakenings. Just as all of nature,
we have our periods of renewal and new growth. Spring
seems to emphasize that as in nature it is quite purposeful.
We can be renewing and growing all the time, but this
time of year is the time to really blossom. Where are
the seeds you have planted beginning to grow? What is
getting ready to spring forth from your fertile soil?
Are you tending to what needs nurtured??? As Pangloss
said in Voltaire's classic book Candide, "we all
must cultivate our gardens."
I just returned from my three week
personal odyssey to Tanzania, Africa with 10 men on
what was called an Inventure experience. I was
unplugged for three weeks and away from anything familiar.
This journey was a very unique way to separate from
my normal life so that I would experience non-ordinary
thoughts, emotions, and a deep connection with the place
where life on earth may have begun. I feel I have changed
on many levels, including a cellular level. I am the
same, but different in ways not yet expressed. I am
still Patrick Williams, just like a rose is still a
rose, when it bursts forward with new vibrant flowers;
yet I know what is emerging in me is new, more vital,
more beautiful. I can't wait to see what comes from
the growth that is occurring.
Where are you growing in your life?
The more you grow as a person, the better coach you
will be. Where are you assisting your clients with their
growing edges? Remember, life coaching is a whole person
approach to being purposeful and fully alive. As Diane
Menendez and I say in our new book, Becoming
a Professional Life Coach:
"We have noticed that as
we gain more training and gain more experience in
working with clients, it is not so much that our
skills and competencies change. But our "beingness" and
our spirits as coaches are at a different level.
Mastery is more about who you are than what you
do or say." Page XXV

Training by Dr. Patrick Williams & Diane
S. Menendez
With his bestselling Therapist as Life Coach,
Pat Williams introduced the therapeutic community to
the career of life coaching. Now, Williams, founder

of the foundations of coaching and its future trajectory, Becoming
a Professional Life Coach takes readers step-by-step
through the coaching process, covering all the crucial
ideas and strategies for being an effective, successful
life coach, including:
Listening to, versus listening for, versus listening
with;
Establishing a client’s focus;
Giving honest feedback and observation;
Formulating first coaching conversations;
Asking powerful, eliciting questions;
Understanding human developmental issues;
Reframing a client’s perspective;
Enacting change within clients;
Helping clients to identify and fulfill core values,
and much, much more.
Dr.
Patrick Williams' Coaching Symposium In Sorrento,
Italy
This four-day seminar is designed to provide professionals
an understanding of the theory, history and practical
methodology of professional coaching as a field. The
seminar will clarify the distinction between therapy
and coaching. Participants will learn skills that are
transferable from the field of therapy and identify
skills that need to be "unlearned" in order
to be an effective coach.
Dr. Williams developed this workshop specifically for
mental health professionals who would like to further
understand the field of coaching and how they may incorporate
coaching into their practice, or evolve their practice
into one entirely focused on coaching. Live and video
demonstrations, audio sessions, practical experience,
and interactive worksheets will be utilized extensively
to illustrate these principles and techniques.

Dr. Patrick Williams, Ed.D, MCC, plans
to bring the without borders concept to coaching; seeking
to create positive social change for the underserved,
undervalued, underfed, undereducated, and underappreciated
in many of the resource poor villages and towns of the
world.
Dr. Williams and other advisory participants are in
the planning stages of a program which will utilize
coaching to benefit those who want to improve their
lives economically, socially, spiritually; and live
more purposefully — to thrive rather than survive.
They intend to use coaching as empowerment to evoke
local wisdom; with guidance to make collaborative and
permanent changes to standards of living; while teaching
techniques that will live on after the coach trainers
are gone.
On April 18th, Lisa Kramer will be
presenting Coaching Couples by Telephone at the
Imago Think Tank Teleconference discussion. Lisa is

What Pat Recommends
Speaking
of Success - World Class Experts Share Their Secrets
Available later this month!
Patrick Williams, keynote speaker, author and professional
life coach, has been selected from a nationwide search to
be featured in the first edition of Speaking of Success;
a highly successful book series from Tennessee-based Insight
Publishing. The book also features best-selling authors
Stephen R. Covey (Seven
Habits of Highly Effective People), Ken Blanchard
(One
Minute Manager) and Jack Canfield (Co – creator
of Chicken
Soup for the Soul). Patrick Williams, Blanchard,
Covey and Canfield, are joined by other well known authors
and speakers, each offering time-tested strategies for success
in frank and intimate interviews.
"This new edition has been revised and expanded to help
readers of all ages—from new college graduates to
recent retirees—develop a practical strategy for achieving
their own vision of the good life, elegantly defined by
the authors as "living in the place I belong, with the people
I love, doing the right work, on purpose." Leider and Shapiro
use stories, personal examples, and innovative exercises
to help readers evaluate the burdens they carry and decide
which help them live well and which merely weigh them down."
"This contemporary parable chronicles the journey
of a dispirited leader in search of something more satisfying
than the bottom line. The authors draw upon spiritual traditions,
poetry and philosophy, teachings on leadership and organizations,
and their own extensive consulting experience to offer inspiration
for today's embattled leaders."
Law and Ethics in Coaching co-edited by
Patrick Williams and Sharon Anderson. With contributions
from a dozen academic, legal, and coaching professionals,
this book is a must for anyone in the field of coaching
or whose organization uses coaching as a service.
"Filled with a dynamic blend of case
studies, discussion questions, illuminating quotes, and
other examples, Law and Ethics in Coaching is both
a trailblazing professional reference and an unparalleled
textbook for coaching programs."
