Pat's Ponderings – Coaching To Life’s Stages
by Patrick Williams, Ed.D., MCC

This past year, my first grandchild was born to my eldest daughter. What a joy to be a grandfather to such a wonderful little person, and to be in a different role as ‘grandpa” to my daughter and her husband. My wife, who has children from a previous marriage already has two grandkids, so she had a head start. But despite that joyful life stage of watching our children raise and parent their children I am struck by a common stage of life that has both joys and challenges (don’t they all?) that coaching support could be a big help for.

My daughter is a finance department manager at a major retail store and her husband is assistant manager of a tire store. Between them they make good money. But they are feeling the change in lifestyle, money crunch, and the energy drain that goes with a new child. Even though they love the new little person, the demand of time, money and freedom all cause this new life stage to be a challenge.

I remember when my children were born in 1977 and 1979; daycare was a pretty new phenomenon. Yes women’s rights efforts made big inroads in women’s ability to work, but the truth is for most families, BOTH PARENTS MUST WORK.

This is one of the biggest change in the last several decades…..so distance coaching for parents could be an added benefit and service to offer new parents. And it could be at an affordable price if you were to use a program like LIFEOPTIONS life coach platform. A coach could have several clients paying a small sum per month with an agreement to have email exchanges, resource recommendations and maybe even individual or group telephone coaching.

I believe this could be a great resource for parents and a new niche for coaches. What do you think? If you coach parents or families in various life stages, let us know. Write back to lifestagecoaching@lifeoptions.com

Warm regards,

Pat

What’s New At ILCT?

It’s been an exciting and busy summer at ILCT, with many exciting new developments, many of which are based on input we’ve received from our students.

Coach Specialist Programs
Much like ILCT’s 80-hour Certified Life Coach program, which has been available for many years, ILCT has been developing programs which will allow students to focus their training in areas they are passionate about and receive recognition for their effort.  After completing the Foundations course, students who are interested in earning such a certificate will need to take an additional 40 hours of suggested courses in their area of specialization, at least one of which must be a practicum level course.

The Wellness Coach Specialist certificate program is the first one to be unveiled so, in addition to our great Body-Mind and Wellness Inventory courses, we’re adding a number of new wellness courses, including Introduction to Wellness, Beyond Recovery, and a Motivational Interviewing course.

You will receive an email from your Student Services team in the next week or so, detailing the requirements for this program, and in the coming months, additional specialist certificate tracks such as Non-Profit, Relationship, and Career Coaching will also be announced.

Mentor Coaching Course
For our students who are preparing to obtain ACC credential through the ICF’s portfolio approach, or who want to take their coaching to a higher level, ILCT will soon offer Mentor Coaching, a 10-hour course which includes 7 hours of group mentoring and 3 hours of individual coaching.

Fall Course Schedule Available
Aside from adding the above courses, a course for EAP and Business Professionals, and the Foundational Training for Christian Coaches, most of our elective and required courses are being held during the next few months so if you’re ready to take the next step in your coach training, visit our website

What Pat Recommends

The Art & Science of Coaching Parents by EdD. NCC Caron B Goode

A New York Times article called the profession of parent coaching “the newest self-help approach for over stretched parents. Until now, there has been no book available for those caring individuals who want to help parents and their children by specializing in the field of parent coaching in addition to establishing a lucrative home-based business. At approximately 200 pages, the book is organized into three parts with a total of twenty chapters. It is backed by the latest professional and educational research into coaching techniques, packed with quotes from the country’s leading parent coaches, supported with case studies, and supplemented with business and information forms, sidebars, and sample press releases and brochures.
