Volume 8 Issue 1– January, 2009

In This Issue:

Tomorrow's Life Coach (TLC) is a monthly online journal from the Institute for Life Coach Training (ILCT) that nourishes the intellect, intuition and inspiration of the personal and business coaching community.

Pat's Ponderings - 10 years!

ILCT celebrates 10 years of business this month!!!!  I write this celebratory "pondering" to thank you for my continued connection with the readers of Tomorrow’s Life Coach and students/members of ILCT.

ILCT was the 12th Accredited Coach Training Program approved by the ICF and there are now over 100!!!  ILCT’s senior faculty of Lynn Meinke, Jim Vuocolo, and Marilyn O’Hearne have been with the program from the first year; Lisa Kramer started teaching with us in 2003.  Sherry Lowry has retired from teaching and Diane Menendez is working with an international coaching/consulting company. We recently added a new faculty member, Susie Strauss. Diana Kilinski, Lisa Kramer and Candia Dye teach the EACS program.

Our high quality faculty, who are all certified and experienced coaches, give our program the worldwide reputation we enjoy in this ever evolving profession. In addition, faculty members have volunteered with the ICF - Lynn Meinke has served on various ICF committees and Marilyn O’Hearne is a current Vice President of the ICF Board of Directors. (I served as a Board member for 3 years and was also chair of the regulatory committee and member of the ethics committee). One of our graduates, Jeanne Erickson is current chair of the ICF ethics committee.  Perhaps some of you want to volunteer time with ICF this year???

I also want to thank our students who have worked toward certification.  We have had approximately 227 Certified Life Coaches, 37 have become full graduates with our Life Coach Diploma and the  ICF Accredited Coach Training Program.  Many of our students have achieved the ACC credential and the PCC credential with the ICF and that number is growing rapidly. Becoming an ICF certified coach is becoming more important every year.

Our Christian Track foundational course has taught over 1000 students in the last 8 years and is expanding into a full Christian emphasis ACTP in 2009! Chris McCluskey and Judy Santos continue to lead and nurture this specialized program in ways that impact a larger community of faith based practitioners.

We have also grown internationally!

Our Korean partner, Dr. Paul Jeong, has now trained 70 students. Forty-one have completed the ACTP.

Our Italian faculty, Laura Cutica Talice, has taught 31 students the foundational class.

In Istanbul Turkey, Lynn Meinke, Esra Aksuyek, and Anil Inan have now trained 33, and 10 have completed the requirements for the Certified Life Coach credential.

In Hong Kong, Pat and Charles Hamrick (our China faculty) have trained 91 occupational therapists and health care workers in the hospital district in the Foundational course. Sixty-one have gone on the achieve the CLC and eligibility for ICF certification.

All this makes me very proud of the quality of professionals ILCT has attracted and bodes well for our future as we target new markets and create new programs.

Here is wishing all of you a prosperous and happy 2009. Live well, live purposefully, live optimally and coach your clients to do the same.

Coaching can help!!!

Becoming A Professional Life Coach

Becoming a Professional Life Coach: Lessons from the Institute for Life Coach Training by Dr. Patrick Williams & Diane S. Menendez

Beginning with a brief history of the foundations of coaching and its future trajectory, Becoming a Professional Life Coach takes readers step-by-step through the coaching process, covering all the crucial ideas and strategies for being an effective, successful life coach.

  • Listening to, versus listening for, versus listening with;
  • Establishing a client's focus;
  • Giving honest feedback and observation;
  • Formulating first coaching conversations;
  • Asking powerful, eliciting questions;
  • Understanding human developmental issues;
  • Reframing a client's perspective;
  • Enacting change within clients;
  • Helping clients to identify and fulfill core values, and much, much more.

From Resource Reviews - With Ruth Harper: The word “coaching” is now a buzzword among helping professionals, yet many may not fully comprehend this trend. “Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential,” according to the International Coach Federation, an organization that boasts more than 15,000 members worldwide.

Patrick Williams and Diane Menendez have written a seminal work on this subject with Becoming a Professional Life Coach. Williams, founder of the Institute for Life Coach training, is a Master Certified Coach as well as an author of the paradigm-shifting Therapist as Life Coach. Menendez works for two coaching organizations: Leadership Mastery Coaching and Convergys Global Talent Development. She, too, is a Master Certified Coach.

The question foremost on most readers’ minds is likely to be what, specifically, is the difference between therapy and coaching? One major difference is emphasis, the authors explain. While psychotherapy often focuses on the past, coaching directs clients to create and design their futures. Critics and skeptics may relegate coaching to the realm of fads. These authors, however, argue that coaching is both a viable career and a bona fide profession in the 21st century. As they explain, “Coaches are now in schools, probation departments, churches, nonprofit corporations and other community agencies.” Click here to read the full review.
