In our initial training as coaches and counselors, we typically focus on learning how to support clients as they move through personal changes and transitions.
Although every change has uncertainty baked into the journey, the level of uncertainty has intensified both personally and collectively in the last decade. Now, more and more large-scale collective events are touching our clients' lives directly and indirectly at a faster rate with more intensity. Shifts in media make us more aware than ever before of the array of changes happening in our own regions and around the world in real time.
To support our clients in this new era of change, we must update our knowledge, understanding, and training to be ready to pivot at a moment's notice if our clients' circumstances change unexpectedly.

Carol McClelland Fields, PhD, BCC, an award-winning author and ILCT Faculty Member since 2004, has been fascinated by how our culture navigates personal, professional, and collective transitions since the beginning of her career. She relies on her intuition, observation skills, coaching work, and personal experiences to notice and articulate emerging trends about change and how those trends impact our lives.
Carol created the Seasons of Change model of transition in 1992 after navigating a series of significant transitions in her personal and professional life. This nature-inspired model has provided the central theme of her work ever since. She's shared this work with others in transition through speaking, workshops, one-on-one client work, retreats, articles, and her books. Although her original book, The Seasons of Change: Using Nature's Wisdom to Navigate Life's Inevitable Ups and Downs (1998) is now out of print, Carol is actively updating her work to reflect all that she has discovered about change, transition, and uncertainty since the book came out. She shares her recent discoveries in her new podcast, ReEnvisioning Change, which begins Summer of 2026.
